Bluebird Eggs Abandoned

Site 2

Well it looks like the 5 bluebird eggs aren’t going to hatch, and the female has been MIA for the last few days. The male has begun calling from the tops of trees and from the house, in vain it seems.

Meanwhile, house sparrows are trying to build a nest in the screech owl ‘slot’ style box(SQR). 3 almost full nest have been removed. they didn’t have anything to do with the failed bluebird attempt, as the monofiliment detered them fine.

  1. Sorry to hear about the bluebird eggs. Very interesting that the house sparrows would want to next in the owl box. You would think the opening would be too big for their comfortability.

    1. it was disappointing, but part of the deal when working with wildlife. On the ‘plus’ side the eggs were infertile. I broke a couple (dropped) when cleaning out the box, just yolks..which is better than a interrupted development. And the ‘couple’ is still around, I don’t know if they will try again, move to a new location or just forage.
